Dermatology deals with diseases of the skin, hair and nails. The range is wide: congenital changes such as port-wine stains and moles, acquired ones such as benign and malignant skin growths, infections, inflammation, allergies and damage caused by the sun and the environment. Wounds that will not heal are also part of it.

Common reasons for an appointment are a mole that is changing, a spot that will not heal, eczema, psoriasis, acne, a contact allergy, excessive sweating or hair loss.

Basal cell carcinoma is the most common form of skin cancer. It develops mainly on sun-damaged skin, grows slowly and very rarely spreads – but it does not heal on its own. If detected early, it can usually be removed with a minor procedure.

Children are not small adults. Their skin is structured differently, is larger in relation to their body and reacts differently to treatments and medication. Paediatric dermatology takes this into account – for atopic eczema, warts and molluscum contagiosum, impetigo, psoriasis or a mole check.

The path

From first look to treatment.

It begins with an examination and often ends with a check-up. In between is whatever the findings require – nothing more.

  1. Referral

    For insured care in the Netherlands, the referral is issued by your GP or, alternatively, by your occupational health doctor. It is not needed for purely cosmetic concerns.

  2. First appointment

    The dermatologist asks about your symptoms, medical history and possible triggers and examines your skin – and, in the case of hair loss, your scalp.

  3. Diagnostics

    Depending on the findings, this is followed by a small skin sample for the laboratory, an allergy test with patches on the back or a blood test.

  4. Findings

    The results are explained clearly – including which treatment is an option and when none is needed.

  5. Treatment

    Topical therapy, cryotherapy or light therapy, or a minor procedure under local anaesthetic. Any tissue removed is examined under the microscope.

  6. Check-ups

    After skin cancer and for chronic skin conditions, regular appointments follow so that new spots or recurrences are noticed early.

Do I need a referral?

For insured care in the Netherlands, yes – from your GP or, alternatively, your occupational health doctor. It must be available before treatment begins. No referral is needed for purely cosmetic treatments.

When should I have a mole checked?

If it grows, changes colour, shape or surface, itches, stings or hurts, forms a crust or bleeds. Usually there is a harmless change behind it. But only a medical examination can establish whether that is the case.

How is a mole removed?

Under local anaesthetic with a small incision; the wound is stitched and covered with adhesive strips. The tissue is sent to the laboratory for examination. Depending on the part of the body, the stitches are usually removed after about a week. If the spot is on the face, a plastic surgeon can perform the procedure.

How does an allergy test for contact allergy work?

Possible triggers are applied to the back with patches. This requires three appointments in one week: applying, removing and reading. For three weeks beforehand, the back should not be exposed to sun or sunbeds, and for one week beforehand no cortisone cream should be used; during the test it must not get wet.

What is different with children?

Children’s skin is structured differently, and children react differently to medication because their organs are still growing. Common reasons for an appointment are atopic eczema, warts and molluscum contagiosum, impetigo, psoriasis or a mole check. With atopic eczema, the focus is not only on itching but also on infections that can result from scratching.

Can skin cancer come back?

With basal cell carcinoma, the tumour returns at the same site after initial treatment in about 4 to 10 out of 100 cases, and around a quarter of those affected later develop a new one elsewhere. That is why regular check-ups are part of the treatment.

What does treatment cost?

In the Netherlands, dermatological treatment with a referral is insured in most cases; the statutory excess may apply. Cosmetic treatments are usually paid for by the patient, with a cost breakdown in advance. If you are insured in Germany, the centre clarifies costs and billing before your appointment.
